How To: Eco Chinese New Year

GONG XI FA CAI 🍊
As we embrace the Lunar New Year's promise of prosperity and auspiciousness, it's essential to address the downside: the excessive waste it brings about.

Here, we've compiled 3 uncomplicated and practical tips to help your CNY be more eco-friendly!

-

BYOB to the grocery shop!

Without a doubt, the CNY celebrations contribute to increased grocery shopping sessions. A 2018 study highlighted the staggering fact that Singapore produces an average of 820 million plastic bags each year from supermarkets alone.

The most practical step to address this is to bring your own shopping bag when you’re out. Beyond being environmentally conscious, bringing your own bag also lets you save that 5 cents on disposable ones! 👍

Reduce single-use plastic cutleries

During this festive season, when you find yourself in the role of a host, it's essential to pause and reflect on the environmental implications associated with the seemingly convenient use of single-use plastic cutleries. While these disposable utensils offer immediate convenience, they come at a notable environmental cost that can no longer be ignored.
One eco-friendly alternative worth considering is the use of wooden cutlery (🪵 Unlike their plastic counterparts, wooden cutleries are biodegradable, which means they can easily be recycled!).

We could also further enhance our eco-friendly approach and opt for non-disposable options to reduce the impact on the environment.

Recycling your red packets!

The Annual Geneco’s Used Red Packet Recycling Initiative is back! 🧧
With unwavering public support over the years, REFASH and Geneco SG are again joining forces to enhance accessibility to these recycling bins. The bins will be available at all REFASH outlets except Eastpoint Mall, Sembawang Shopping Centre, Causeway Point and Chinatown Point. Make sure to drop off your red packets before they are collected back by 31 March 31 2024!

Last year, the collective efforts of Singaporeans allowed for over 2,930kg of red packets to be collected, making our long-standing traditions even greener. Let’s strive to surpass this achievement and collect more this year! 💪

Let’s embrace the spirit of celebration while staying green and environmentally conscious! Every small effort, such as reducing single-use cutleries and recycling old red packets, contribute to a brighter, more sustainable future.

Wishing everyone a joyous Chinese New Year filled with prosperity and happiness! May the Year of the Dragon 🐉 bring us all good fortune and a commitment to a greener lifestyle!
